Union urges government action in wake of ford job cuts

The federal government's recent announcement to axe 60 positions in its waste management department and scrap the annual $4.1 million in annual pay has left workers wondering if they too might have been laid off.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources, which administers waste management under the Department of Natural Resources, has put some of the roughly 11,000 employees in the department in new jobs. The cuts take effect on June 1.

The cuts, which are set to take effect immediately, also affect an increasing number of department-wide positions and jobs currently posted at the Canadian Tire building.

The department has asked employees in the office of the Environment and Sustainable Development to send letters of reassignment, but these were due on Oct. 18; most were expected on Oct. 22.

"This is a difficult time for the department as we rebuild its ability to effectively manage waste in all phases of its operation — from disposal through final disposal to disposal to collection and final disposal," said a statement from the department Thursday.

'We are all just looking for an easy job'

There are three types of people working for the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. They are part time workers who must spend part of their time doing waste management work, a part-time worker who must continue with waste management duties and a full time worker who must spend much of their time working on environmental management.

The current level of $4.1 million of annual pay for workers in waste management — paid as part-time — is about what the federal government spends on all types of government programs in all fiscal years.

But the cut in this department's salary represents less than half of that. For instance, some of the positions cut from the Department of Environmental Resources include positions in the Office of the Environment; Operations; Special Projects (including the Office of Environmental Management); and Environmental Management.

It is estimated that 1.5 per cent of the Department's staff are also employees in other parts of the department.

Many employees who want to leave their current jobs will be able to do so in the near future, the statement said.

"Employees may be able to find the new department position that has been posted through letters of reassignment, or may be able to find additional positions in other areas of the department," said the department's press release.

The cuts to waste management have some concern that this may mean that the Department of Environmental Resources could potentially have less funding in the upcoming federal budget that is due out in the spring.
